Sampling pools and hot tubs can help to protect bathers health

The physical, chemical and bacteriological properties change constantly in a swimming pool, hot tub or spa pool. Some of these changes take place in seconds, others in hours or days. Good water quality management practices will identify and allow operators to understand and react to these changes

Pollution is introduced almost continuously into pools and spa pools mainly by the bathers themselves.

Water is an excellent vehicle for the transmission of disease, therefore it is important that this pollution is minimised and controlled by appropriate water treatment and pool hygiene. Good control of the water quality levels will reduce the risks to bathers, the staff and will have a significant effect on controlling running costs.

How often should my pool water be tested?

Swimming pools and hot tubs require different sampling programs, as there is a higher concentration of people to the size of water. This added to the elevated temperature can make it difficult to maintain satisfactory disinfectant levels, pH levels and microbiological quality.

Water quality testing should be performed at least monthly to monitor the presence of microorganisms. More frequent water quality sampling will be necessary if there is a problem, or for particularly heavily loaded pools. Hydrotherapy pools, even those not in a healthcare setting, should be tested weekly. We also provide sampling for recreational bathing waters such as lakes and ponds - find out more here.
